Same layout, same footprint — a completely different kitchen. This Dover renovation shows how much changes when you update the finishes and the light without moving a single wall.
This one in Calgary's Dover kept its exact L-shaped layout and its peninsula, and still came out looking like a brand-new room. It's a good example of what a well-planned refresh actually buys — the honest tier a lot of Calgary homeowners are really after — so here's the before and after, and what changed in between.
The bones were fine; the finishes had just aged out. White raised-panel cabinets with chrome knobs, brown speckled laminate counters, and a single boxy fluorescent light doing all the work under a textured ceiling. The appliances were a mismatched white set — a top-freezer fridge, a coil-top range, and a plain hood with no microwave — and the floor was the tan ceramic tile that dates a room faster than almost anything. It worked. It just felt a decade or two behind the rest of the house.
The layout, though, was genuinely good: an efficient corner-sink L with a peninsula that already gave the room its shape. So the plan wasn't to tear it apart — it was to keep what worked and change everything you see and touch.
Everything visible got renewed, and the layout stayed put — which is exactly why a project like this lands in the refresh range instead of the full-renovation one.
The cabinets went from raised-panel to clean white shaker with matte-black bar-pull hardware. The brown laminate counters became bright white quartz with the veining that reads as marble. That one boxy light was replaced with recessed pot lights and under-cabinet lighting, and the textured ceiling was smoothed out — the room went from dim to genuinely bright. A white tile backsplash went up where there'd been bare wall. The dated tile floor came out in favour of a light, grey-toned plank floor. The mismatched white appliances were replaced with a coordinated stainless set — and this is where a "refresh" quietly gains function: an over-the-range microwave and a dishwasher were added where there hadn't been one. A black gooseneck faucet over a new sink finished it.
