Most kitchen renovation pages in Calgary won't give you a number, and we understand why — no two kitchens are the same. But you're trying to plan a budget, so here's the honest picture, laid out by what your project actually involves: our real ranges, what moves them, and how to tell a complete quote from a lowball. These are early budgeting guidelines rather than a quote for your kitchen; a real number comes from seeing the space.

How Much Does a Kitchen Renovation Cost in Calgary? 2026 Ranges by Tier

Here's the honest version, in the same three tiers we use on our kitchen service page and in the project quiz — one consistent set of numbers, so the picture doesn't change depending on which page you read:

TierTypical range (CAD)What it covers
Entry-level project (layout stays)$30,000 – $40,000Refacing or new cabinets, new counters and backsplash, lighting, hardware
Typical project$45,000 – $75,000New semi-custom cabinets, quartz counters, flooring, appliances, minor layout tweaks
Complex or high-end$80,000 – $150,000+Full gut, layout redesign, structural changes, custom millwork, premium appliances

Client-ratified ranges, byte-matched to our kitchen service page — early budgeting guidelines, not a quote for your project.

An entry-level project keeps your walls and plumbing where they are and makes everything you touch feel new — the right tier when the layout works and the finishes are just tired. A typical project is what most Calgary families are picturing: new cabinets, new counters, new appliances, and the small layout tweaks that make a kitchen finally make sense. A custom project moves walls, changes the footprint, and often opens the kitchen into the rest of the main floor — the tier where structural work and engineering enter the budget. Those bands line up with the project-quiz budget questions (under $30K, $30–75K, $75–200K), so you'll already know roughly where you sit before you talk to anyone. Why Published Calgary Kitchen Costs Disagree So Much

If you've been researching, you've seen a mess: a directory says the "average" Calgary kitchen is under $15,000, one contractor guide says $25,000 to $125,000, and a luxury firm quotes the high $100,000s. No wonder people give up and ask Reddit.

Here's why those numbers disagree, plainly. Directory averages blend everything filed under "kitchen" — a $2,000 cabinet-hardware swap sits in the same average as a $90,000 gut renovation, which drags the "average" down to a number that buys almost nothing. Specialist guides (a cabinet maker, a countertop shop) quote only their slice, so their range looks low because it isn't the whole project. Full-service contractors quote the complete job — design, demolition, all trades, permits, finishing — which is a bigger number because it's a bigger scope. None of them is lying; they're answering different questions. The ranges on this page are our own published ranges for a complete, contractor-managed renovation — the whole job, not a slice of it. That's also why our service page, this guide, and our quotes all use the same numbers: a cost guide that contradicts its own contractor isn't much use to you.

What Drives Kitchen Renovation Cost in Calgary

Five things move the number more than anything else. Knowing them tells you where your money is going — and where you can flex:

  • Cabinetry — the single biggest line on most kitchen projects. The jump from stock to semi-custom to full-custom cabinets moves the budget more than any other choice. It's usually where the tier is decided, and it's worth spending where you'll open a door every day.
  • Layout and structural changes — moving or removing a wall means engineering, a permit, and carefully sequenced trades. It's the biggest single jump between the refresh and full tiers, and it's what turns a $40,000 project into a $90,000 one.
  • Permits and inspections — moving plumbing, gas, or electrical, or changing structure, triggers a City of Calgary permit; a like-for-like swap usually doesn't. We arrange the permits and inspections as part of the project — that's our paperwork, not yours. You can read the City's home-renovation permit guidance if you want the detail.
  • Labour and trades — a kitchen touches a plumber, an electrician, a tiler, a cabinet installer, and more. Coordinated long-term trade partners under one accountable lead keep the pricing and the schedule predictable, instead of five separate bills and five separate calendars. (They're trusted trade partners, not in-house employees — we're straight about that.)
  • Appliances and materials — the spread between keeping your appliances and a full premium package is real money, and cabinets carry the longest lead time, which drives both the schedule and when deposits come due.

Where the Money Actually Goes

On a typical full kitchen renovation, the budget splits roughly like this — your project will vary, but the shape holds:

Line itemRough share of a full renovation
Cabinetry~30–35%
Labour & trades~20–25%
Counters & backsplash~10–15%
Appliances~10–15%
Flooring~5–10%
Electrical & plumbing~5–10%
Contingency~10%

Rough, hedged shares for planning — every kitchen is different. Not a fixed breakdown of your project.

That answers the question everyone asks — the biggest expense is almost always the cabinets. Calgarians also ask about cost per square foot: the market cross-check runs roughly $125 to $375 per square foot, but per-project beats per-foot for planning a kitchen, because a small galley can cost as much as a big kitchen when the cabinetry and appliances are the same — the floor area isn't what you're paying for.

What $35,000, $60,000 and $120,000 Actually Buy in Calgary

Numbers are easier to plan against when you know what they get you. Here's the honest read at three common budgets.

$35,000 — a genuine entry-level renovation. New or refaced cabinets, new counters and backsplash, updated lighting and hardware, and paint, with the layout staying put. It's a real, satisfying update — what it isn't is a moved wall, a new island where there wasn't one, or a full appliance package on top. If the layout works and you love the bones, this is money well spent. Working with a tighter number? Our guide to budget kitchen renovations in Calgary covers how to save without cutting the corners you'll regret.

$60,000 — the full renovation most families picture. New semi-custom cabinets, quartz counters, new flooring, a full appliance package, better lighting, and the minor layout tweaks that fix the daily annoyances. This is the tier where a kitchen stops being "updated" and starts being the kitchen you'd have chosen.

$120,000 — complex, with the walls in play. A full gut, a redesigned footprint, structural work to open the kitchen into the living space, custom millwork, and premium appliances. At this level you're not renovating a kitchen so much as reworking how the main floor lives. If your number sits between these — most do — we'll tell you honestly what it buys and where to put it.

The Costs People Forget to Budget

The sticker price isn't the whole picture. The extras that surprise people:

  • Permit fees — modest, but real when the project needs them.
  • Disposal and dumping — a demolished kitchen has to go somewhere.
  • Eating out — weeks without a kitchen adds up on the food bill.
  • Appliance delivery and install — often quoted separately from the appliance.
  • A contingency — we'd suggest holding roughly 10–15% back for the unexpected.

And two mistakes that genuinely blow up kitchen budgets: starting demolition before your cabinets are confirmed and ordered (a delay there stalls everything behind it), and taking the lowest of three very different quotes without asking why it's the lowest — a number that low is usually missing scope you'll pay for later. If our demolition ever uncovers something unexpected, you'll see exactly what we found, review the options and costs, and approve any extra work before it moves forward — that's The Suite Guarantee, and it's why you'll never learn about a problem from an invoice.

How We Quote a Kitchen Renovation (and Keep the Number)

Our process is built so the final number matches the estimate. You start with the project quiz or a call, we do an in-home consultation to actually see the space, and then you get a fixed written scope, priced in detail, before any construction begins. No moving target, no "we'll figure out the cost as we go."

"There were no surprises and they were right on with their estimate and time from start to finish."

A note on the numbers: these are our own published ranges, used for early budgeting — not a quote for your kitchen. What you actually pay depends on scope, finishes, structural work and site conditions, which is what the walkthrough is for. Your written scope and price come after an in-home consultation.
